If you could see me now, I'm hanging my head in shame. My poor little blog has been so neglected lately!

To be honest with you, I have so much going on, and I have to have my priorities. My clients' sessions, editing, and so on have to come first. And when that is finished, it doesn't leave much time for blog updating, or anything else. Sometimes in life, you have to trim out some of the "not absolutely necessary" things to keep your sanity.

I think from here on out, I may only post an update with a link when I update the gallery. I know it's not as much fun, but it's better than being so neglectful.

Yeah... perhaps I need to take a break from the blog catching-up marathon before I fry my brain? I was trying to think of a catchy title that would relate to these repeat clients, and that's what I came up with. Pete and Repeat. Sigh...

This family is one of my favorites. You probably recognize Brandi, Chad, Cayden, and Colby by now, as they have been coming to me since my first photography-biz days and usually do at least two sessions per year.

I had the great pleasure of playing with them at the beach again this year and had a blast with this sweet, happy family. Check them out... aren't they adorable?

Endless thanks to Brandi, Chad, and family for being extraordinary clients whom I love to spend time with. Your repeated business and friendship is more than I could ever hope for and I truly appreciate it.

Little Braden... All-Star Extraordinarre!

Braden came to me this summer all the way from Lansing. His Mom told me he was a sports nut and especially had his heart in baseball and football.

So after a few adorable "Mom-shots" in the studio...

we headed to Oriole Field for some shots that really reflected Braden's personality.

Babe Ruth in the making? I'd like to add this next one was completely unscripted and candid... Braden all the way! :)

Sweet baby Raland

I had the honor and pleasure of photographing baby Raland back in October and absolutely fell in love with the little guy. He is one of the sweetest babies I've ever met, and was an absolute champion model.

Aaron & Brandon, Christmas 2010

I really don't do many Christmas portraits... and that's okay by me. It's not that I dislike doing them - I love trying to come up with creative ways to express a "theme" session - but I'm so incredibly busy in the time leading up to "pre-Christmas" that I don't mind the lull in sessions in late November/December.

However, Aaron and Brandon's mom brought the guys to me in 2008, when I was first getting started, and though they didn't get a chance to pop in for a session in '09, Mom was dead-set on getting some awesome 2010 Christmas photos.

And with handsome guys like this, I couldn't possibly let her down!

We also took some non-Christmasy photos, which the brothers again rocked.

Thank you to Brandon & Aaron for not only being great models, but for bringing that radiant smile to your Mom's face. Thanks as well to Diane for trusting in me again this year!

Mary... 2011 Senior

Hey folks... sorry I'm lagging so far behind in my blogging. It sort of went by the wayside during my very busy July-November season, which then led into Christmas and Jackson's 8th birthday in January.

I've tried in the past to sort of keep my posts in order by session, but I think I'll just go ahead and randomly post some photos from last "season" to keep this place alive.

Mary is a 2011 MCC Senior and is a spunky, artsy, full-of-life girl. She's a top-rated Forensics member, a sporty cheerleader, and a free-spirited artist, not to mention that she rocks out both acoustic and electric guitars. Talk about a multi-talented chick! Check out some of my favorites from her fall session:

We started off at the old school in downtown Scottville. I thought the school and the old desk I had bought awhile back would be the perfect setting for Mary in her cheer uniform.

We then traveled to West Shore and used their beautiful pond area as part of Mary's outdoor session.

Then it was time for a little urban action in Ludington.

You may have noticed that in the past year or so, we've had some "gang" activity in Ludington. (I say "gang", because, I'm sorry, but the thought of a gang in Ludington sort of cracks me up. What do they call themselves... the Beach Bums?)

At any rate, they've been leaving their mark all over downtown, vandalizing buildings that hard-working Ludington citizens have purchased for business use. When Mary and I saw such markings on one of the buildings we were using, we decided to turn it into something more positive. So, behold... Mary, the non-gang princess!

It was nearing dark at that time, so we packed our stuff and headed for the studio

where Mary channelled a rebellious rock star for the remainder of her session.

Many thanks to Mary for being such a great sport and being willing to try some "off-beat" things during her session, AND to Mary's mom, Becky, for bringing her to me and being such a wonderful person. Thanks ladies!

You've got HOW many people?

I have to admit, when I was asked to do a family beach session for 22 people, the majority being children, I was BEYOND nervous. You would think that I would feel just a teeny bit better because I knew some members of the family, but instead, it just doubled the anxiety because I so badly wanted to please my friends.

I met Butch through my 'day job' and just loved him from the start. He is easy-going, genuine, and hilarious! I knew before I had ever met his wife, Mari Kae, that she must be really special to have ended up with this sweet, crazy, funny guy. And I was right. Together, they are the life of the party and I just love them both.

So, it was no surprise to me when I met the rest of the family, and they were just as mellow, funny, and good-natured as Butch and Mari Kae. Not to mention... what a gorgeous family! There are six adult "kids" - 2 guys and a gal for Butch, and three gorgous ladies for Mari Kae. Collectively, they have TWELVE grandchildren (and one more on the way, I believe!). Needless to say, it was a challenge to get a decent shot of that many people, but we did it! :)

After, we spent a lot of time on the beach getting all the seperate family/kids/etc. shots.

Here is my absolute favorite, and I couldn't think of a better family to attempt this shot with. Love it!

I loved the grandkids, too, and especially fell in love with the littlest ladies of the bunch.

Here is another favorite shot. I love how the three (so-adorable-it-ought-to-be-outlawed) rough & tumble little boys are just pounding through the sand, while their beautiful little sister delicately skips along, trying to keep up. Just priceless.

Chris ~ 2011 MCC Senior

One of my early sessions was with a senior named Micheal. You may remember seeing his awesome photos on the dairy farm and his beloved snowmobile.

This year, Micheal's brother Chris is a senior at MCC, so I had a chance to hang with him as well. Luckily for me, it didn't mean side-stepping around cow patties in early August. :)

We started out downtown for a little urban action,

then headed down to the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan, where Chris rocked out his beach photos.

These next two are probably two of my favorite beach photos from all the sessions I've done. Chris' bright yellow shirt looked amazing against the perfect, cloudy sky.

We finished up Chris' session with a few fantastic studio shots,

and called it a day. Though Chris' session was a little less adventurous than his brother's, I'd have to say it was a success!

Two perfect little models

I had the pleasure of having Makenzie and Morgan in my studio on a model call a few months ago.

This was one of the most fun sessions I've ever had. Makenzie was SO mature and cooperative and allowed me to doll her up in various outfits. I loved it!

Morgan was precious as can be,

and did a great job with her cake smash, too.

Miss Elizabeth... sugar and a whole 'lotta spice

So, my baby girl is turning FOUR on Friday! Yes, four... going on fourTEEN! (Sigh...)

Anyhow, as a photographer, I have to say it is sometimes VERY difficult to get decent shots of your own kids. So when they do turn out better than you'd hoped for, it's such a rush!

I did two sessions with Liz for her fourth birthday. The first one I had in mind the moment I found a pair of vintage kids' boxing gloves at an antique store. Since Liz has two older brothers, she was pretty much born a tomboy. So I had wanted to capture that "boyishness" about her by making her look like a tough little boxer.

Well, when she ended up with a shiner after a pool toy accident, we made lemonade out of our lemons.

My favorite little "GAP family"

I once again had the honor of photographing Derick & Jessica and their precious boy, Hudson on the shores of Lake Michigan this summer.

This gorgeous family, whom I affectionately refer to as my "GAP family" because they look like they fell straight out of a fashion magazine, came to me all the way from the Carolinas while they were visiting family here in Ludington.

Hudson is not only adorable, but super smart and funny, too. I had a great time chasing him up and down the sand.

Cute kids and a great cause....

I was honored to be asked by Safari Sun Salon & Tanning to help with a charity event in August that would benefit Lakeshore Animal Friends.

Safari Sun hosted a "block party" in the lot of the strip mall on US-31 in Ludington, where they are located. There were tons of activities for kids, including a bounce house, a rock wall, face painting, and a dress-up booth.

A monetary donation to Lakeshore Animal Friends or a stuffed animal for the MMC Pediatric Unit bought you tickets for a raffle, in which you could win one of many fun prizes, including free pizza, tanning, martial arts, or a stay at one of our fine local hotels.

My duty was to help the kids in the dress-up booth and then take a photo of them, which was sent to them with a print release at no charge.

I had a blast playing with these little girls (and boys!) and couldn't have asked for cuter models that day. Here is a look at some of my favorites:

Brenna... beautiful 2011 Lansing senior

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Brenna and her family from Lansing. I knew right off the bat from speaking to Brenna that she would be SO much fun to work with!

Brenna chose the "urban/industrial" look for her first location. Check her out!

Next, we headed to the beautiful Ludington State Park, where Brenna continued to 'work it'.

Finally, we headed down to gorgeous Lake Michigan, where we captured some fun-in-the-sun images of the lovely Miss Brenna.

When Brenna first told me on the phone that she was bringing her saxophone for a few shots, I was psyched! She said she wanted to do something different with it; not the standard instrument-and-grin photos and I immediately thought of a sunset beach silhouette.

After she was in the water, I explained what I wanted her to do. "Oh!" she said, "You want a horn pop!" (You learn something new every day.)

Summertime....an' the livin' is easy...

Well, it may not technically be "summertime" yet, but it sure feels like it! And it feels GOOD! :)

Here are a few photos from last few weeks... playing catch up here.

Let's start out with a Mother's Day tribute to three hard-working moms - My beautiful mother-in-law Carol, my tender-hearted, gorgeous sister-in-law Kelley, and little ol' me. We've known each other for around 12 years now, yet this is the first photo of the three of just the three of us together.

I've been very blessed to have great in-laws that I care so deeply about, so I'm thrilled to have this little token of our "togetherness".

I also managed to achieve a photo of me and my sweet Elizabeth together on Mother's Day. We don't often have photos taken with each other (since Mom's always behind the lens), so this is a real treat, too.

In mid-May, I was a vendor at the 2nd annual Mom 2 Mom sale. If you haven't checked this sale out before, you're missing out on tons of great deals on beautiful new or gently-used clothing; not to mention meeting some fabulous moms like I did!

I made quite a haul this year, and since I had sold a few larger items that belonged to Liz, including her pink push car and Power Wheels quad that she'd outgrown, we decided to get her another ride-on. And we found the perfect car to fit her personality...a pink Mustang!

There goes the neighborhood, right?!? If you're ever on our court, be on the lookout for a speedy little Mustang driver wearing shades and a princess hat on...backward.

On an especially warm day in May, close to bathtime, my offspring snuck outdoors to see what mischief they could find.

I discovered them in the front lawn, (almost) fully clothed, running through the freshly cut grass and getting soaked in the sprinkler.

While the mom (and maid) in me wanted to yell to them to get inside, and that they were going to make a big, wet, grassy mess... I paused for a moment and just watched them.

I saw the exhuberant smiles across their little faces as the water sprayed their bodies.

I heard their giggles and cries of joy in the air as they tried to escape the water's path and bumped into one another.

I watched my three children, whom often fight like bear cubs, enjoy each other's company and have good, old-fashioned, sprinkler-runnin' fun.

I tried to remember what it was like to have no worries. To just run through the sprinkler. Not caring about the mess it would make on the floor later, or how clingy and uncomfortable regular clothes can be when they're wet.

I tried to remember the excitement of school coming to an end, when the sweet smell of bbq mixed with freshly cut grass was in the air, and the sounds of children playing drowned out the drone of a neighbor's lawn mower in the distance.

I tried to remember my effortless tan, and how my own hair would turn pool chlorine-bleached blonde, and how my feet were filthy because I was running around carefree and barefoot.

So I let them play. Sometimes, you just have to let them play.

This spring, we mail-ordered a few caterpillars so we could watch and learn about the life cycle of the butterfly. It was quite interesting, and though we really enjoyed caring for them, the day came to release our friends.

(On a side note, doesn't Liz look SO stinking adorable in those braids?!?!? She'd NEVER allow me to do that to her, but she'll do anything for her "second mama", Sue.)

After our "release party", we ventured next door to our awesome neighbors', Todd & Michelle's, house to visit in their beautiful back yard while the kids ran laps on their little woodsy path.

I'm SO thankful I still had my camera in hand, because had I not, I might have missed this beautiful moment between a big brother and little sister. Check it out:

Memorial Day weekend was Alexus' big day - her graduation party. Her family threw an awesome luau-themed party with pig roast and all, and I was able to capture a few quick shots of them together before Lexie heads off to MICHIGAN STATE, including this fun one:

And of course we had to get a shot of the kids with one of their all-time favorite babysitters.

The following day, we had a neighborhood cookout (fun, fun, FUN!) and let the kids go wild in the sprinklers.

So, there you have it, folks! Our entire lives for the past month, in one post! ha!

You'll be seeing more posts from me soon, as my 'busy season' draws near. Next week, we'll welcome Miss Hestyn into the world with a newborn shoot, and possibly celebrate Sammy's first birthday with a rip-roarin' cake smash! So stay tuned!

I even considered getting some lighting for my basement studio.

FINALLY I decided on this adorable chair from AllChildrensFurniture.com, one of CSN's online retailers.

I intend to use it as a prop for babies and toddlers.

Let's just say it got here a LOT faster than it took me to decide what to order! I was really surprised at the timely shipping, which, by the way, was FREE!!! As a matter of fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the majority of items from CSNStores.com shipped free. (Especially the large items that would normally incur extra shipping fees!)

We had a busy weekend, so the large box sat dormant in my entryway for a few days as I procrastinated on assembling it. When I finally ripped that box open last night, imagine my surprise... it was already fully assembled!

So...let's get down to the nitty gritty and talk about the good, bad, and the ugly.

THE GOOD:

Very neutral color; would look great in just about any setting

Child-sized, but not so small that it looks like a "novelty" chair. Fits in nicely in a living room setting and looks like a functional piece of furniture.... for someone of smaller stature, of course. :) In fact, it matches my living room furniture perfectly.

Nice little pedastal feet,

just like my real furniture, shown below:

VERY sturdy. I attempted several times to see how easily it could knock over. This was incredibly important to me, as I would never want someone's child to be injured by one of my props, of course. This baby was NOT going anywhere. It will NOT tip over.

could fit in it. Yes; the nine-year-old may be a bit of a stretch, but he said he was comfortable, so I'll take his word for it.

THE BAD

No protection during shipping

Does not have a lever to recline the chair... though this could be a GOOD feature as well, because I could see something like that being easily broken in my house.

Fabric does not seem to wipe off well. In fact, I was so excited about ordering, I guess I didn't read all the details, because I thought it was leather. The fabric is nice, though... don't get me wrong. But you'll want to make sure to keep grubby hands off of it.

The fabric also seemed darker than pictured on the website, which didn't bother me, but might throw off another purchaser if that's important to them.

The tacks (or what-have-you) in the back that hold the back piece of fabric down seem to have somewhat sharp edges and seem to poke through a little. I don't foresee this being a huge problem, but if you were running your hands up and down it, you might notice.

THE UGLY

Honestly, I cannot think of anything that would keep me from purchasing this chair again. At less than $70, fully assembled and shipped, I think it was a heck of a steal!

Upcoming review - CSN Stores!

I was pleasantly surprised to be contacted a few days ago by a representative of CSN Stores, who has asked me to do a review on my blog.

I hadn't originally intended for this blog to include reviews/giveaways, but I figure if they are photography-related, it might be kind of cool to do so!

If you haven't heard of CSN Stores, it is a GREAT site with over 200 stores, featuring unique, quality products... everything from baby products to furniture and health items.

I'm not sure what I'll be reviewing yet....perhaps something from their fine selection of photo frames, or maybe a camera bag or even a furniture item (aka prop!). Mr. David, age 3!

You may remember that I had posted some studio shots of THIS beautiful family a few weeks ago.

Well, I am pleased to announce that Chad, Brandi, and Cayden's family has grown by one little boy!

And what's more, he was SO well behaved during his "studio-to-you"* portrait session! Though he was awake 99% of the time, he was content just to cozy up on whatever prop I put him on/in and barely fussed at all.

What a blessing Colby is to his family! As you can see, he fits in well...

Even big brother Cayden seems to have an immediate bond with this little guy.

It is with a heavy heart that I'm posting what will probably be my last senior session with Alexus.

Alexus has been an outstanding model, and I have really enjoyed my time with her on location and in the studio.

But... it's time for her to move on. She'll be graduating soon, then moving off to MSU(!!!!) to further her education.

Because we have at this point developed such a great photographer-model relationship, we easily scored some AWESOME studio shots for Alexus over the weekend. Check them out!

When I saw this adorable jacket/vest/shirt combo at ABC Kidz, I knew instantly it'd be the perfect wardrobe for Jackson's seven-year photo shoot.

I was so excited to get some shots of him in this, but unfortunately exitement is one thing, and having spare time on your hands is another.

Although I didn't get a chance in January to capture Jackson's personality in photos, I finally got an opportunity Saturday evening. I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome! Take a look:

I just can't get enough of this adorable little family!

This is the third session I've had with Chad, Brandi, and Cayden, and soon they will be adding another little bundle of joy to their crew - a baby boy, to be named Colby!

This was my first maternity session, and hopefully not the last, as I really had a great time with this shoot.

Brandi is absolutely radiant, and, get this - STILL WEARING HER "NORMAL" JEANS! I have no idea how she got so lucky, but I tell you, I was in maternity wear by month three! And probably NEVER looked as cute as she does, just a few short weeks from delivering!

What good is a castle without a princess?

Seeing as Elizabeth has two older brothers who have effectively taught her to behave like a bear cub in the wild, she has grown to be a bit of a tomboy.

Now, I'm not saying that's a bad thing. In fact, I'm proud that my little girl can stand up for herself and put those boys in their place.

However, you know, I had my fun dressing and playing with two boys, and I sort of thought that maybe...just maybe... I might get to throw the occassional dress on Liz.

I thought wrong.

She throws wild fits when I attempt to put her in anything but stretchy pants! Which is fine & dandy on daycare days, but hey - when we go somewhere "special", I would really love to see her in something a little cuter.

To my surprise, Sue, who is Liz's daytime caretaker Monday - Friday, confessed to me that Liz OFTEN wears princess - yes, PRINCESS - dresses at her house with the other little girls.

Liz?

MY Liz?

No way.

I'm not sure how I did it (okay, perhaps the lollipop bribe did the trick), but I finally convinced her to put on this GORGEOUS princess dress that my Aunt Vicki made with love for her.

So, without further ado, here is my little Princess, looking beautiful in her gown... in photos I never thought I'd ever get the opportunity to take.

So, Marc's latest project is his best yet. I still can't believe he even did this; it is SO amazing! Trust me when I say, these photos don't do it justice.

The stairs lead all the way up to her awesome bed, and the bottom three steps open up for storage. How cool is that?!? :)

Monson Photography is currently scouting for 2011 Senior Ambassadors!

If a teen you know is currently a junior in high school and will graduate in 2011, they are eligible to apply. Please read the FAQ below and pass this information on to someone who might be interested.

Why would I want to represent Monson Photography?

I enjoy creating a unique session for each senior and love the challenge of trying to get even the quietest of teens to come out of their shell and show a little personality for their senior portraits.

Though I am always sure to capture many “traditional” portraits, I love to get creative with my seniors and set them apart from the crowd a bit. I am not afraid to go the extra mile to ensure every senior receives awesome photos. Snowmobiling, bass fishing, two-tracking, guitar playing, horses, or sports… whatever your passion is, I will find a way to embrace it in your photographs, and believe it or not, we will have FUN doing it!

What’s a Senior Ambassador?

A Senior Ambassador would act as a representative for Monson Photography, distributing referral cards to other high school seniors.
They should be outgoing, photogenic, and willing to approach their peers in regard to senior portrait sessions. It is preferable that they participate in at least one extracurricular activity, even if it is not a school-funded program.

What would the expectations be?

As a Senior Ambassador for Monson Photography, I would expect you to show up and give 100% at your session and try your best to enthusiastically refer other seniors to Monson Photography.

If you are selected, I would invite you to my studio for a session in March/April, so that your referral cards would be ready in time for you to begin handing them out with plenty of time before the end of the school year.

We’ll do an additional, outdoor session during the spring, summer, or winter – your choice. As the 2010 – 2011 school year continues, I would ask that you continue to hand out referral cards.

I would also encourage you to utilize social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. to refer other seniors to my website.

That’s it!

In exchange for their services, the Ambassador would receive a few “perks”, such as:

 A discounted Senior Portrait Session – Only $75 for Ambassadors!
 15% discount on portrait orders (excludes graduation announcements/invitations)

On 1/30, I celebrated my 29th birthday. Now, I know what you're thinking... "Gosh, she looks just 21!" And while I thank you for that, I must remain honest with my readers. Also, you should contact me immediately so I can recommend a great optimitrist in the Ludington area.

Those of you who followed me last year might remember that back then there wasn't much to celebrate on my birthday, as my beloved grandpa had recently passed away and his funeral was held on the 30th. It was a really awful time, and I truly thought that those feelings would follow me year to year.

However, I'm very happy to report that I had a great...no, the BEST birthday I've had in a long, long time this year. I know Grandpa would be happy about that, too. And I owe it all to my beautiful family, especially my loving husband, Marc.

I started off the day in bed, past 7:30, which is a rare treat in itself! The family then hopped over to Logan's basketball game (I did shower first; I'm just skipping the overly mundane details here... give me some credit!), which has been so fun to watch!

After the game, we came home and I was presented with the BEST birthday cake ever. Just take a look at this thing! Can you believe Marc actually took the time to concoct this thing? It's unbelieveably COOL!

I think the best part of my whole day was having my sweet babies sing "Happy Birthday" to me. Marc held Liz in his arms as she bellowed "Happy Birfday to Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-meeeeeeeeeeeeeee" with an adorable grin on her face. Jackson, mid-song, stopped to slip a necklace over my head - a red "Mardi Gras bead" style necklace he bought for me at school with his good behavior pennies. He had the proudest little impish smile. I loved it. Logan was ad-libbing, being silly as always.

Right up there with the song was getting a card from my Grandma. She's 80 years old and I'm pushing thirty, but bless her heart, the woman still sends me a card and a $10 check. I love it. The money doesn't matter, but I think it's adorable. She has 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and I'm sure they all get a $10 check, too.

After a bit, we headed for Muskegon to do a little browsing. Marc took me to Best Buy to pick out a MP3 player for my birthday. I got THIS ONE and absolutely love it!!! I listen to alllllllllllllllll types of music, so having everything at my fingertips just rocks! You never know what I'm in the mood for.

I found some really, really adorable things for Liz's upcoming revamped bedroom (more on that later... I can't wait to "unveil" Marc's latest project. The guy's a genius!) at Hobby Lobby, and then we went to the Texas Roadhouse for what was probably the BEST steak I've ever had in my life. It was *almost* worth the public humiliation I experienced when Marc quite stealthily arranged to have me sit atop a saddle while it was announced to the entire restaurant that it was my birthday. (Yeah... I even got the "Big, Texas Roadhouse YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!")

Later, we continued our adventures at the Little River Casino in Manistee, where Marc totally pulled a birthday girl escort faux paus and picked every winning slot machine in the joint, leaving me with the losers. In the end though, sweet, sweet man he is, he split his winnings with me.

We returned home to a nice, quiet house full of sleeping kids (Thank you, Alexus!) and ended our day by soaking under the stars in the hot tub.

So... there you have it! I think it was a darn-near perfect day. I'm so glad that we had a great time and I got to spend my day with the people I love most.

Adventures in Higginsland

On Jan. 22nd, we packed up the family and headed to Higgins Lake for a fun-filled weekend with my sister-in-law, Kelley; brother-in-law Kyle; and nephew Parker at their family cabin. And when I say "cabin", I mean beautiful abode that knocked our socks off. Just beautiful! (In hindsight, I really should've taken photos of the cabin itself. Darn!)

Marc's mom & dad, Ron & Carol, met us there on Friday so we could celebrate a whole "grouping" of recent birthdays. We had a really nice meal, played cards, had a lot of laughs, and called it a night.

The next morning, when Marc woke up at the crack of dawn (I really need to explain this whole "vacation" thing to him...), he hurried back in the bedroom and told me if I wanted a cool sunrise photo, I'd better go and look out the window.

Well, that was enough to rouse my curiousity, so I peeled myself out from beneath the warm blankets to see what the fuss was all about.

The cabin sits right on Higgins Lake, so you can literally walk out the door and set your foot on the frozen lake. It's a big hot spot for ice fisherman, just as Houghton Lake is. When I looked out the window and witnessed the most beautiful sunrise reflecting on this seemingly endless frozen body of water, I knew immediately what Marc was talking about.

I think in order to appreciate just how fast the sun actually rises and sets, you have to try to photograph it. Because once the sun starts to rise up or fall, you really only have a few minutes to get what you need. Knowing this, I quickly slid on my big 'ol winter boots and coat, grabbed my camera, and shot outside with my hair sticking up in every possible direction.

Had I known I was going to get this opportunity, I would've brought my tripod. But alas, the sledding gear, birthday gifts, etc. took precedence over my photography gear, so I had to do the best with what I had, which was my 50mm 1.8 and the two hands God gave me.

You know... it's really QUITE cold when you're standing at the edge of a lake before sunrise in January. Imagine that! So, my shivering got in the way of what could've been some great shots. But I did end up with this semi-decent photo

and even sucked it up and stayed out for a few more captures.

I know this place must be really wonderful in the warmer months, but even in the winter it's just so peaceful and absolutely breathtaking. Although I was freezing my biscuits off... it was well worth the view.

After everyone was awake and received a bellyful of Kyle's delicious pancakes, we decided it might be fun to take the kids sledding. So we bundled everyone up, unbundled some to use the bathroom, then rebundled them, and headed out to what Kyle jokingly (or so I THOUGHT...) referred to as "Suicide Hill".

"Suicide Hill" is comprised of a very wide, long, sloping hill that leads into a patch of forest. Below is not the greatest photo and doesn't do it justice,

but I shot it as I was sliding slowly down the icy slope on my backside. The hill was pretty slippery, but we didn't think much of it and were looking forward to some nice rides.

Being the good daddy he is, Marc borrowed Parker's inflatable sled and prepared to take Liz for her first REAL sled ride. As Marc settled onto the big raft and turned to grab Liz, the sled began to take off on its own. Marc quickly threw Liz onto his lap, and I managed to fire off this one shot before they took off like a bolt of lightening.

I kid you not, they may have broken some speed limits plummeting down Suicide Hill. Every time we thought they were going to stop...they just, you know... kept on going! Which sent Kelley and me into uproarious fits of laughter.

Little did I know, Marc was beginning to get worried, as the sled wasn't slowing down much and they were getting close to the forest. He later told me he was mentally preparing himself to toss Liz off the sled before they hit a tree! Luckily, they came to a stop before someone was injured.

It was then my turn to take Miss Princess for a ride. I decided I'd rather not end up in the next county as Marc did, so we started about halfway down on the other side of the hill. Parker was ready to have his sled back, but since I'm his favorite Aunt :) and he loves "Lizzy", he let it slide. Pun intended.

I sank myself into the big round sled, and before I could get into a good position, Marc plunked Liz on top of me so that we were sort of belly-to-belly and her little rosy-cheeked face was looking up at me.

Before I knew it, we were zipping down that hill at a rate of speed much higher than my comfort level. It didn't take long to me to bust into absolute panic mode. You see, I'm not a "speed" person. I don't like roller coasters, and I'm not much for water slides. In fact, sometimes I even get a little scared sliding down the curly slide at the playground with Liz on my lap. Indeed, I am a wimp.

As I said, I started to panic. With me sunk into the middle of the sled and Liz on top of me, I couldn't see a thing! For all I knew, we were going to hit a tree. So I tried to shift my weight ever-so-slightly to put me in a better position. Well, that back fired and made us zing down the hill at record speed... completely backward. All I could think of is... "We're going to DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE!" No, really... my life flashed before my eyes and I had the same thought as Marc, of tossing Liz aside so she wouldn't face greater injury. When you're in one of those innertube-like inflatable sleds, you can't even reach your feet down to slow your pace. You're completely at the mercy of the never-ending hill and ice as slick as motor oil.

Finally, just as I was ready to say my final goodbyes to Liz, we ended up in a patch of thorny sticks that stopped us in our tracks. As I lay there, panting, thanking God for saving my sorry rear, I looked down at Liz and was surprised to see her little SMILING face looking back at me. "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, Mama!" she beamed, "You did that right! I didn't get snow in my face!" Apparently she was virtually clueless as to our near-death experience, and I wasn't about to fill her in.

To add insult to near-injury, now I had a 1/2 mile trek uphill with a three foot tall person in tow. By the time we neared the top, Liz was on my back and I was hurting from earlobe to toe. I handed Parker back his sled, which had suffered a lashing when we landed in the sticks. It was now dangling from my arm like a wet noodle and flopping in the wind. I felt pretty sheepish and, without looking him in the eye, told Parker Uncle Marc would patch it for him. So much for "favorite Aunt".

As I was still struggling to catch my breath, I was also wondering why I hadn't had any help getting the deflated raft and tired three-year-old up the hill. At that point, I turned to find Marc helping a teary-eyed Logan up the hill. Apparently he'd done some Olympic Trick Sledding himself and had been tossed off and hit his head on a rock! We decided then to call it a day... and keep an eye on him for a concussion.

Later, Kelley relayed to me that Kyle had asked her, "Didn't they see the kids' hill on the other side?" Ummmmmmmmmmmmm no. Nope. We didn't. But thanks for the fun! :) ha ha

By the time we arrived back to the cabin, Logan was still consious and feeling better, so Kelley, Liz, Logan and I thought we'd check out the frozen lake. Liz especially thought it was pretty sweet to be standing on ice.

Mom thought it was pretty sweet to try to bounce flash off of the snow-covered ice. :)

After that, it was hot cocoa time.

Later, we had a wonderful dinner, drank some wine, played cards again, shared many more laughs, and retired for the evening.

The next day it was time to head home (BOOOOO!), even though we were having such a blast. We decided before we ended our fun weekend, we should take the kids bowling first. What a great time we all had there! Here are a few photos from the day.

I can't thank Kyle, Kelley, and Parker enough for the GREAT weekend. We really had the best time and have so many great memories. I am hoping we'll make it a habit of meeting up there over the course of the year. In fact, Kelley and I are planning a girls' retreat in approx. twelve days! (Who's counting?) :)

Leg-o my Lego birthday party!

Today was Jackson's seventh birthday, and we also held his party today.

There was no doubt which "theme" he'd want this year, as these kids have Legos coming out of their ears! And really, it made for a rather fun and inexpensive party.

I made 3 different flavors of cake in 3 different shapes - a rectangle (13x9), a square (not sure of the dimensions; it's the Wilton square pan; probably about 10"?), and a regular, 2-layer 8" circle. I made cupcakes, cut off the muffin tops, and sat them upside-down on top of each cake, then frosted. They were semi-easy, but a little time consuming... but I think they're pretty cute. And the kids loved that they could choose from white, chocolate, or strawberry cake.

I used inexpensive table covers on the two tables and bought matching round plates so the tables themselves would even look like Legos. I bought foam core poster board and Marc and I made Lego posters to put all over the house,

and I even sucessfully made a Lego-man cutout! (Though I was told by Logan that he's a little cross-eyed.)

We used a lot of the boys' Lego sets for decor, being sure to put them on shelves or in a cabinet if they were the intricate, don't-want-to-have-to-put-this-back-together kind. And of course we had plenty of loose Legos out for building.

The birthday boy was PLENTY excited,

so when his guests arrived, we got this party started! First, I set a timer for 3 minutes everyone tried to build the tallest freestanding Lego tower.

We did a two-team relay-type game, where each player took a turn trying to toss a Lego into a cup, and the team with the most Legos in the cup at the end won. Then we gave everyone 24 small brick Legos, a plastic cup, and a pair of chopsticks. Each player had to put one hand behind their back and try to be the first to get all their bricks in their cup.

Jacks had a great time opening his gifts from his friends,

and then it was time for lunch.

On the menu was:

Ham & turkey sandwiches, cut into squares and adorned with circles of cheese to make them resemble a Lego.

Blue jello minifigures (Lego men), cut with cookie cutters purchased from Lego.com (sorry, no photo; it went too quickly!) and carrot sticks,

All kinds of fruit and cheese,

and individual koolaid bottles, amoung other little snacks.

It was then time to blow out the candles on Jackson's birthday cake,

then each guest received two minifigure cookies to frost (and eat) as they please.

After our guests went home for the night, it was time for Jackson to open his birthday gifts from Mom and Dad. I think we did alright with what we chose for him...

Logan decided this year he'd like to play basketball, and so far he's loving it!

It's so much fun to watch these little guys play. And, I must admit, I'm really having a lot of fun trying to get some halfway decent action shots. It's a LOT harder than it looks, with the shoddy gymnasium lighting and all. Not to mention, I really don't have the proper "glass" for these conditions. But it's fun, nonetheless, so I'm sure you'll be seeing more of these guys.

Sparkling juice (and Moscato for us "big kids"),

a tiny bit of healthy food,

and each other's company.

Couldn't have asked for anything more. :)

A few days before Christmas, the Ludington Daily News began running a request for Christmas morning photos, so I sent in one of each of the kids. We were all pleasantly surprised the next morning to see Jackson gracing the cover of the newspaper!

(Okay... so I'm not Bethany "Monton", but I can live with that!) :)

The LDN will be chosing five people from the entries to receive a Christmas pop-up book. How fun! I'll let you know how it turns out.

We made reindeer cupcakes, played games (including the most INTENSE game of musical chairs ever,)

and finished off the afternoon by assembling sticky little milk carton "gingerbread houses". FUN STUFF! :)

Today we invited over a few friends for a pretzel-making party!

Every year Marc and I make chocolate-covered pretzels, and though this year they might not have been as "pretty" - we sure had more fun making them!

If you're interested, get yourself some pretzel rods, chocolate almond bark, vanilla almond bark, and toppings (crushed candy canes, pecans, cashews, almonds, heath bits, mini m&ms, decorative sprinkles, etc). Melt the bark and spread a thin layer on a pretzel. Set on wax paper to dry. When completely dry, spread on another thin coat of chocolate or vanilla and roll in your topping of choice.

*Sigh*

I've lost track of how many times I've, uh, lost track of this project. Now, don't get me wrong - I truly have taken a photo EVERY DAY this year. But somewhere between my camera and my blog, things have gotten a little screwy. I don't want to point any fingers, but the problem may exist somewhere between the chair and keyboard, if you catch my drift. However, I'm laying part of the blame on Blogger... don't ask. Sometimes it likes to mess with you.

Anyhow, I want to thank those of you who spent the last year keeping up with my sometimes very random postings. This has been quite a journey, and I appreciate you coming along for the ride. Please accept my apologies for the spontaneous numbering, as it's gotten away on me a few times. And also for the 2 or 3 photos that were lost in some worm hole somewhere, never to be seen again.

Today was an oddly warm day for November. I decided to get the kids out of the house for some fresh air, and after much arguement, decided it would be the "Beach Park" we went to.

It was warm and beautiful, and of course I had my camera handy and was glad I did, as the light at the beach this time of year just can't be matched.

I was going through some drawings today that Jackson had done in class and was astounded by the amount of detail he'd drawn into them. In three seperate pictures, the scene was in our living room, and he'd sketched everything from the artwork on the wall to the little basket of remotes sitting on a round table next to the couches.

Then I came across this one,

and was a little perplexed. I didn't recognize the area, although it was labeled. So I asked Jackson to tell me about it. He said "It's the hotel restaurant," and proceeded to explain all the details - the cereal, the stacks of bowls, the juice machine, waffle maker, etc.

I was thoroughly impressed, and even more so when I realized he was talking about back in January, when we'd stayed overnight at the Super 8 for his birthday and had the continental breakfast the next morning!

I swear, this child can't remember the names of half the kids in his class after spending several months with them, but apparently he's always taking everything in.

I told Logan that we could stop at Barnes & Noble on the way back from his appointment at DeVos one day, since he'd never been there. I figured I'd let him pick out a couple of "Goosebumps" books and call it a day.

To my surprise, he picked out this $25 Lego Star Wars "Visual Dictionary", and bullied me into buying it for him. I couldn't believe I let myself spend that much on a "stupid Star Wars book".

Fast forward a few weeks, and I swear this "stupid book" has paid for itself ten-fold. Logan and Jackson have spent hours huddled around this book, learning about Star Wars Legos from early on until present.

So... I suppose if you have a little one that is both a fan of Star Wars and Legos, this is probably an ok $25 to spend.

I made this veggie skeleton for Logan's class. We also made frozen, chocolate-covered banana "ghosts", but I forgot to take a photo before we wrapped them all up to freeze.

It turned out pretty cute, I think, but didn't have much to it, so I just made up an additional veggie tray.
